The car has 44,500 mi. and runs and drives great. It has all original black interior and is in excellent condition. This car has never molested or taken apart. The black paint is all original and in excellent shape, as is the black partial leather interior. The manual top is less than two years old and in perfect condition. This car is equipped with the rare, full tonneau cover, which is in as-new condition; the boot that covers the top when it is down is in good shape, but does have a 2-3 rip that has been repaired (see third-to-last pic).

While the car was originally delivered with 16×6/7″ forged Fuchs alloys, it now wears early Turbo-sized 16×7/8″ cast Fuchs replicas (EuroMeisters); the buyer can choose between the perfect original Fuchs, or the equally perfect replicas seen on the car in the pictures. The tires have less than 5000 miles since new.

Less than 300 miles ago the car received a major service from CS Motorsports (www.csmotorsports.net, 262-257-0678), including new fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, valve adjustment, tune-up, and all fresh fluids (Brad Penn and Swepco). CS also lowered the car to Euro-spec ride height and aligned it accordingly.

Documentation includes the original books and manuals, original registration and insurance paperwork, ALL service records/receipts, and a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche (ordered and en route). The original spare, compressor, and tools are present and included, as is the top boot, full tonneau cover, and car cover. Delivered new to original owner Fred Lapham – via his business, Walker Homes – on December 13, 1958 at Gezon Motor Sales of Grand Rapids, Michigan (then a Studebaker, Packard, and Mercedes-Benz dealership, now a Nissan, VW, and Mitsubishi store), this 1958 Mercedes 190SL was titled as a ’59 as per then-common practice. The price on the included window sticker was/is $6014.30. Also included with the car is the original title and the original Mercedes-Benz “Owner’s Service Policy” warranty paperwork (along with enough other original receipts and records to write a book, or in this case fully fill a 3-ring binder).

In the late 1980′s Mr. Lapham’s son took stewardship of the car, and from 1991-’97 he performed a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration. This is fully documented with receipts for everything from rubber seals and grommets, and the restoration of the original Becker radio, all the way to engine/trans rebuild and the paint job. Dozens of included photographs further document the process. All the brightwork was re-chromed and/or polished, the interior upholstery, carpets and top replaced, the floorboards repaired (properly), and all the suspension and mechanicals completely rebuilt and refreshed. Everything was gone through and replaced or rebuilt.

Mr. Lapham’s son then enjoyed the fruits of his efforts and expense for approximately 3500 miles until the summer of 2006, when my uncle purchased the Lapham family 190SL; he and my aunt have enjoyed it as a summer toy in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin since then, and just recently asked me to help sell it so they can add a new toy(s) to their collection.

Being that I deal almost exclusively in Porsches, it seemed prudent to have someone who’s forgotten more about early SL’s than I’ll ever know about them go through the car and tell me what’s what. So, upon agreeing to help sell this wonderful classic Mercedes, I had the 190- and 300SL experts at Black Forest (www.blackforestllc.com, owner Michael McKinney – 414/228-4899) perform a very thorough and detailed inspection. Black Forest concluded that the car is a very nice driver that has been restored into a solid 190SL that one can be proud to show, drive, and enjoy.

Now that is not to say that as with most restorations, there aren’t a few quirks here, because there are: for whatever reason, when the engine and transmission were rebuilt, the engine block and the transmission case were painted red rather than the correct black; the seats have been recovered in the correct original color, but with vinyl rather than the leather with which the car was originally equipped; and the carburetor linkage was painted black as opposed to being plated as it was new. Also, the fuel filter has been changed to accept a non-Mercedes filter, and the right rear wheel cylinder has a slight leak. All very minor, but nonetheless details about which potential buyers should be informed. The fluids have just been changed and the car just detailed.

In the end, this is a wonderful, fully-restored, uber-documented 190SL that runs as good as it looks, and needs nothing but a new owner.

The original owner went well beyond specifying all-black when ordering this 1986 Porsche 911, as the car’s equipped with scores of very desirable factory options such as a Limited-Slip Differential (option 220), driver and passenger Sport Seats w/ power height and angle adjustment (383, 387), 16″ Fuchs (395), Bilstein sport shocks (474), short shifter (241), automatic heater controls, central locks, cruise, alarm, plush trunk carpet/lining, and a full leather dash (which as you can see, is upholding the unfortunate leather dash tradition of getting slightly wavy, but nothing’s separated or showing any signs of wanting to do so). The original, stamped service book, owner’s manual, tool kit, compressor, never-used spare, and original, never-used Porsche plastic gloves and mat are all present.

In addition to the stamped service book, included are paper records/receipts for the car’s trouble-free service history, including the major service we had CS Motorsports (262/257-0678) perform on the car less than 100 miles ago – new shocks front and rear, new tires (Yokohama Avid, 205/55/16 and 225/50/16), replaced the left camshaft oil line and the engine sound insulation mat, and changed the engine and transmission oil (Brad Penn and Swepco, respectively). The valves were adjusted less than 5000 miles ago at the 45,000-mile service. Everything works (the original, unmodified A/C and Blaupunkt Monterey as well as they ever “worked”), all service is current and fresh.

A positively stunning 2-owner car, with the most recent caretaker having owned it for over 20 years – in the southeast – this beautiful 1985 Porsche 911 m491 Turbo-Look coupe shows and drives as if it has half of its 75k miles, and wears most of its original paint (no accidents, but the previous owner had the hood re-painted years ago and we had the driver’s front fender and door re-sprayed to correct clearcoat damage; color match is absolutely perfect, but a paint gauge will confirm this work). We lowered the car to the proper European ride height, but other than that, European H-4 headlights, and replacement Audiobahn speakers in the doors, this heavily-serviced m491 coupe is original.

In addition to the $10k+ m491 Turbo-Look/SuperSport option (1 of 391 built for the U.S. market in 1985, 213 of which were coupes), this particular 911′s option list includes a black headliner and dual 8-way power seats. The headliner is flawless, the seats, dash and carpet excellent, and the floormats new (Lloyd’s). No cracks, warps, rips or tears anywhere. Like most 911′s of this era, the heat will melt your eyes out, while A/C will not allow you to see your breath on a warm day. The original Blaupunkt Monterey works, as does everything else.

When we acquired the car a few months it was a nice, original piece that had clearly fallen from the top of its owner’s playlist; it had some “sitting disease,” every symptom and effect of which we had completely cured by CS Motorsports (262-256-0678) during a recent, ultra-extensive service less than 100 miles ago that included: major engine tune up w/ new plugs and wires, new oxygen sensor, new distributor cap and rotor; valve adjustment w/ new valve cover gaskets; new drive belts; replacement of both camshaft oil lines and the “s-tube”; new left CV joint and outer CV boot; new shift rod seal; new engine sound insulation mat; new right foglight; new driver’s door check; all new light bulbs inside and out; new fuel filter and air filter; all new fluids – brake, trans, engine. CS also lowered and aligned this m491 coupe to Euro-spec and installed new Toyo T1-S tires (205/55/16 and 245/45/16) on the near-perfect original Fuchs.

Obviously this 1985 Porsche 911 m491 Turbo-Look coupe is more than a quarter-century old and has traveled 75k miles in its life, so the expected chips and nicks are present, if minor, and thanks to the color, nearly imperceptible. This m491 911 looks, runs and drives wonderfully, with no leaks and great compression – 150+ on all cylinders – though for the record, it does release a single puff of smoke on start-up if it’s sat for more than a week or so.

Certificate of Authenticity, service records/receipts, toll roll, jack, original spare and compressor, and cover are present and included with this fully-serviced, turn-key, silver/black m491 Turbo-Look Carrera coupe that needs nothing but a new home.

This m491 Turbo-Look cabriolet wears most of its original Grand Prix White paint, and other than being lowered to European-spec ride height, it’s stock. No evidence of any accidents, and owned by the same collector since 1995, this m491 cabriolet has been well taken care of, and had the 60k service with valve adjustment performed on schedule, a few years ago. Less than 50 miles ago CS Motorsports (262-256-0678) serviced the car, with work including: a new clutch cable, shifter bushings and shift coupler; one new oil line (no drips, seriously); new engine sound insulation mat; and all new fluids – brake, trans, engine. During this time CS also lowered and aligned this m491 cab to Euro-spec, and installed new Falken tires, 205/55/16 and 245/45/16 on the original 16×7/9″ Fuchs (standard anodized centers with chrome lips and painted crests).

The dash is perfect, with no cracks or warps. The power seats are in very nice shape. Ditto the black carpet, with the exception of some thinning/wear near the dead-pedal (see pic). The black, manual top is decent, with a clear rear widnow and new side window seals. Velour trunk carpeting is perfect. Floor mats are new. Owner’s manual, Certificate of Authenticity, tool roll, spare, compressor, and some service records/receipts are present and included. This 1986 911 m491 Turbo-Look cabriolet is turn-key; everything works, including the cruise, A/C and original Blaupunkt (the latter trio as well as they ever did).

Finished in classic Guards Red with Cashmere leather interior (black dash, door tops and plastics) and a black top, this 2-owner m491/m470 Cabriolet has 57,748 well-documented, trouble-free miles (its most recent – local – owner enjoyed the car for 15+ years, and approximately 25,000 of the miles). Other than fresh consumables (Brad Penn and Swepco oils, belts, plugs, etc), brand new Dunlops (205/55/16 and 245/45/16), and being professionally lowered to European ride height, this car is 100% factory original – and as close to perfect as possible for a 20+ year-old car.
